Abilene, Texas – January 10, 2019 – The Abilene City Council approved the Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System for Abilene Regional Airport at a 10 percent match for the total price of the project, thanks to funding through a Federal Aviation Administration grant. Guardian sensors detect and identify the sound and muzzle flash signature of a gunshot and automatically notifies airport staff and emergency responders. The system uses both sound and muzzle flash sensors to greatly reduce false alarms. “If somebody drops a bag or something onto the floor and makes a very loud sound, it can distinguish those (types of incidents),” said Don Green, director of transportation services.

Recent national tragedies remind us that the risk of active shooters are real and should be prepared for. An active shooter is an individual engaged in attempting to kill people in a confined space or populated area. Active shooters typically use firearms and have no pattern to their selection of victims. Many government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA have teamed up with local, state and federal law enforcement to create resources and readiness plans to mitigate risk and quickly resolve dangerous situations. When every second counts, The Guardian instantly sends communication alerts via digital floor plan map, text message and e-mail with time, and location of each gun shot.
